Located to the north of the 1,013-metre-high Burgsteinberg, St. Oswald in the district of Melk offers a magnificent view of the Alps to the south. The stones of St. Oswald: natural monuments worth seeing
Several specially formed rocks in St. Oswald invite you to look and marvel. The popular skull stone, as the name suggests, resembles a skull. The face of the rock also faces north - the direction in which, according to Germanic belief, the realm of the dead lies. In contrast, the equally well-known heart stone resembles a human heart. In the past, this "passage stone" was used as a symbol of fertility and to ward off illness.
