Schottwien
The market town of Schottwien is nestled in a gorge between Grasberg, Otter, Sonnwendstein and Eselstein. The town is ideal for anyone who enjoys being active in the great outdoors. Many pilgrims are also drawn to the basilica in Maria Schutz - a district of Schottwien.
From spring to fall, hikes and bike tours start directly from and through Schottwien. In winter, it is mainly ski tours - for example to the Sonnwendstein - that attract nature lovers to the region.
Maria Schutz pilgrimage site
- Maria Schutz pilgrimage church: The popular pilgrimage site of Maria Schutz and the church of the same name are located in the upper part of the market town. Water flows from the "Holy Well" there, which is said to have healing powers.
- Snack on monastery doughnuts: At the Kirchenwirt in Maria Schutz, you can taste the giant doughnuts made according to the family recipe, which are known far beyond the borders of Semmering.
Hiking recommendations
- Sonnwendstein:There is a small mountain chapel on the Sonnwendstein at 1,523 meters. From there you have a magnificent view over the Vienna Basin and the entire Semmering-Rax-Schneeberg region.
- Eselstein: The Eselstein is also known as the building rock of Carl Ritter von Ghega, because he had an ideal view of the region from there and planned the Semmering Railway.
