Schrems
The Waldviertel municipality of Schrems in the district of Gmünd is also known as the "granite town" due to its landscape. It is located directly on the European watershed. Excursion destinations and exciting sights attract day trippers and short breaks to this family-friendly municipality.
Schrems was founded around the year 1200. 14 villages now belong to the municipality - from Anderlfabrik to Schrems. The leisure activities on offer include hiking and cycling routes, soccer and tennis courts and a motocross and ice skating rink.
Schrems: the most beautiful natural excursions
Extensive hiking trails await you everywhere in Schrems - e.g. on the Vereinsberg, where you can discover two monuments, a shrine and wonderful viewpoints. A family highlight is the Schrems high moor nature park. Its underwater kingdom is home to the famous otters, among others, which can be observed particularly well in cute show feedings. The 300-hectare peat bog, which is bordered by the villages of Langschwarza, Gebharts and Schrems, is considered the largest bog in Lower Austria.
In summer, the Schrems Moorbad open-air swimming pool also offers swimming and bathing action. And the Schrems Forest is home to a particularly interesting rock: a wobbling stone surrounded by a stone circle rises a full 3 meters into the air.
Art & culture in Schrems
The Waldviertel Art Museum invites visitors of all ages to discover their own creativity - with a sculpture park, gallery, adventure tours and great creative workshops. The Wald4tler Hoftheater, which is located in Pürbach - right next to the historic Franz-Josefs-Bahn - is also very well known. Every year, several high-quality productions are performed by local and international artists.
Also worth seeing are the Schrems Town Museum - which provides detailed information about the history of the town - as well as the pillory from the 16th century, the Felix Fountain from 1750, Schrems Castle and the parish churches of Schrems, Langegg and Langschwarza.
