Marktgemeinde Weiten
Vacations in the valley of sundials: The market town of Weiten in the district of Melk welcomes its guests with crisp air, richly wooded slopes and well-tended meadow landscapes. Nestled between the Jauerling (959 meters) and the Ostrong (1060 meters) - the mountain ranges of the southern Waldviertel - the feel-good town is located in one of the most beautiful valleys in Lower Austria: the Ysper-Weitental, also known as the "Valley of Sundials". Idyllic excursion destinations and wonderful hiking trails make a stay in Weiten an unforgettable family experience.
Weiten: Sunny excursion tips for young and old
The Jindra metalworking shop - a traditional craft business founded in 1858 - is constantly reviving the ancient art of building sundials. Each sundial is unique. The sundial house and garden as well as the permanent sundial exhibition can be experienced in a particularly exciting way as part of a guided tour. We also recommend a visit to Austria's 1st camel riding school - with workshops, rides and many other great offers.
The Weitental Garden Railway impresses with a railroad layout in a private garden. A tour of the 135-metre-long track is available by appointment. In summer, Weiten also offers clay tennis courts and the popular outdoor pool - with a beautiful sunbathing lawn and play area.
The castles in Weiten
The restored, privately owned Mollenburg castle at the northern end of Weiten was once the seat of the Mollenburg lordship, which once granted the village of Weiten market rights. The ruins of Streitwiesen Castle - located around four kilometers north of Weiten - have been restored by private investors. Today it is known as the "Youth Castle" - and is therefore a popular meeting place for young people.
