The soil and the art of winemaking
Poysdorf, in the heart of the northern Weinviertel region, is a place where landscape and wine form a quiet but deep connection. Here, where the wind blows over rolling hills and the light bathes the vines in warm gold, the vineyards are rooted in limestone-rich soils that give the wine its strength and elegance. The climate is Pannonian – sunny during the day, cool at night – a combination that gives Grüne Veltliner its unmistakable spice and clarity.
But Poysdorf is not only synonymous with Veltliner, but also with sparkling visions. Marion Ebner-Ebenauer, one of Austria's most exciting winemakers, has demonstrated the region's potential for great sparkling wines. Her distinctive sparkling wines, above all the Blanc de Blancs Zero Dosage, have long been among the best in the world – and have even caught the attention of Champagne.
Sparkling wines have always fascinated me; they have something sensual about them, they are light-hearted and, yes, even a little bit unreasonable.
She spent six years working with her husband Manfred to perfect the sparkling wine – and it matured in the cellar for seven years before seeing the light of day. Today, Poysdorf is considered, in the words of wine critic Robert Parker, a region whose sparkling wines "outshine champagne".
