City Trip Zwettl

Between old walls and timeless river landscapes

Nestled between Kamp and Zwettl lies the Kuenringer town of Zwettl - a historical gem in the heart of the Waldviertel. Since its first mention in 1139, it has been one of the oldest towns in Austria, characterised by town walls, baroque town houses and quiet courtyards that preserve the flair of past centuries.

Today, Zwettl is lively and open: Charming bookshops, fine shops and cosy cafés characterise the old town, where the hustle and bustle on the squares and under the arcades invites you to linger. The fountain designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser on the main square brings colour and joie de vivre to the cityscape, while the traditional private Zwettl brewery has been shaping the city's culinary identity for over 300 years.

Those who stay longer will also discover tranquil river landscapes, rolling hills and hiking trails that lead through the unmistakable nature of the Waldviertel.

Places of interest

Zwettl Old Town

Behind the old city wall, an old town full of character and history unfolds. Narrow alleyways, colourful baroque façades and lovingly restored bay windows tell of the wealth of craftsmanship of past centuries. The Old Town Hall with its sgraffito façade and striking tower now houses the town museum. In between, bookshops, small shops and cafés invite you to linger - a place to slow down and discover.

If you want to delve deeper, take a guided tour of the town or use the audio guide in the Hearonymus app and experience how Zwettl brings history to life.

In Hundertwasser's footsteps

On the main square, the colourful Hundertwasser fountain with its curved shapes and golden spheres brings colour to the townscape - a symbol of creativity and joie de vivre. The world-famous artist owned an old mill not far from Zwettl, which served as his retreat.

From here, the hiking route "In Hundertwasser's footsteps" leads along the banks of the Kamp to this tranquil place. Along the way, there are charming views of the river, forest and town - a combination of art, nature and poetry that makes Zwettl tangible in a special way.

City wall

The mighty town wall of Zwettl is one of the most impressive historical buildings in the Waldviertel. Since 2023, it has been accessible again via a new staircase along the promenade. The path leads through eight centuries of the town's history - with views of the battlements, the courtyard of the SONNENTOR City Lofts and the surrounding old town.

The walk is particularly atmospheric at sunset, when the light dances on the old walls.

The striking Anton Tower with its heptagonal ground plan is a landmark of the town and an impressive reminder of Zwettl's fortified past.

Zwettl Abbey

Zwettl Cistercian Abbey, a masterpiece of medieval architecture and the spiritual centre of the Waldviertel region, is just a few kilometres away. Monks have lived here according to the rules of St Benedict since 1138. The Romanesque-Gothic cloister and the mysterious fountain courtyard impress with their quiet beauty - a place reminiscent of film scenes from Harry Potter.

A guided tour of Zwettl Abbey opens the doors to the magnificent library with its impressive collection of books and manuscripts and the extensive abbey garden, where roses, medicinal herbs and silence set the tone.

The offer is complemented by the fish farm: fresh trout and Waldviertel carp are on offer here - a piece of monastic tradition to take away.

Waldviertel craftsmanship

Zwettl is a town where craftsmanship and mindfulness are at home. Fine organic cosmetic products are created in the "Schau auf Di" manufactory - natural, hand-stirred and inspired by the regional flora. Visitors can attend workshops and gain insights into the production process to learn how natural ingredients are turned into skincare with character.

A few streets away, Andreas Reiter, a passionate woodturner, brings an old craft into the present day: he uses local wood to make artistic bowls, boxes and unique pieces.

Zwettl shows what makes the Waldviertel so special - handcraftsmanship with heart and attitude.

Taverns and coffee houses

In the inns, poppy seed noodles, potato dishes and carp variations meet game from the surrounding forests - down-to-earth, regional and full of flavour.

The "black gold", the Waldviertel poppy, seduces in sweet and savoury forms, while in Sprögnitz near Zwettl, fragrant herbs and teas that end up in many kitchens and cups originate from the SONNENTOR experience. Zwettl beer, a fine brandy or a wine from the Kamp Valley ("Kamptal" in German) is served in a glass.
