Enjoy the silence of the untouched nature of Steinbachklamm (gorge). Up in Maria Taferl great views of the Danube valley and the Nibelungengau await you.

Description

The tour starts at the panorama panel at the landing-stage in Marbach. The way leads past the „Winklermühle“ (mill), up through the untouched nature of „Steinbachklamm“ (stone creek gorge). From Hilmanger the way leads down offering a wonderful view into the Danube valley. Through small villages and wooded area the last part of the way is steep and leads you up to Maria Taferl.

The Nibelungengau long distance trail is split up into 8 stages and can be passed through in both directions. Signs along the way will help you to find the right direction.

Route description Nibelungengau long distance trail 3: Marbach - Maria Taferl

The tour starts at the panorama panel at the landing-stage in Marbach. The way leads past the „Winklermühle“ (mill), up through the untouched nature of „Steinbachklamm“ (stone creek gorge). Enjoy the peace and quiet moments and use some time to relax. After the gorge, you have the opportunity for a short rest in the nature or a little further at restaurant Gressl in Hilmanger. Now the way leads down offering great views of the Danube valley. You are crossing small villages and wooded area before the last part of the way leads steep up to Maria Taferl. The way leads past the impressive basilica before the tour ends in front of the panorama panel at the village entrance. High above the Danube valley the village of Maria Taferl offers a unique panoramic view overlooking the entire Alps from „Schneeberg“ to „Traunstein“. Maria Taferl also is the most important place of pilgrimage in Lawer Austria.

Directions

Highway A1 until exit Pöchlarn, then take the first exit at the roundabout, and after about 1 kilometer turn left following direction „Donaubrücke“ (Danube bridge). Cross the bridge, stay left and follow road B3 to Marbach.

Approaching from Grein or Krems, country road B3 leads you directly to Marbach.

Parking

At the landing-stage in Marbach or at the center of Maria Taferl (also at the basilica).

With the Austrian Federal Railway (ÖBB) you travel to trainstation Pöchlarn (timetable). From the trainstation you can take a bus (Postbus) to Marbach. Further information about bus schedules here.

We recommend to use a car, because public transportation does not offer direct connections.
