Silent witnesses to the past

Knights’ fortresses, fairytale castles and ancient ruins attest to the rich history of Lower Austria and are popular destinations for excursions.

More than 70 fortresses and castles are spread throughout Lower Austria. In recent decades, many of them have been renovated and opened up to guests. A visit to a castle is often a journey back into the historical past of the last several centuries in Lower Austria. There is so much to look at and admire, from antique furniture, tableware and the first bathrooms to documents, coins, knight’s armor and historical costumes! Carefully curated exhibitions often provide an insight into everyday life of those times long ago: What was life like for scullions or for young unmarried noblewomen? How hard did farmers have to work to make a living?
