Travelling on the panoramic carriage – or the ‘Himmelstreppe’ (Stairway to Heaven) – the modern carriages of the Mariazellerbahn, makes the journey along Austria’s longest narrow-gauge railway between St. Pölten and Mariazell a truly unique experience.
This historic narrow-gauge railway is served by steam and diesel trains, which run between Gmünd and Groß-Gerungs and between Gmünd and Litschau using vintage rolling stock.
Between Krems and Emmersdorf, it runs through ancient cultural landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – with golden motor coaches and a route that stays clear of the main roads.
The Reblaus-Express runs between Drosendorf in the Waldviertel and Retz in the Weinviertel, featuring historic carriages, including a bicycle compartment.
The rack railway has been climbing the Schneeberg since 1897, mostly using Salamander trains. On certain weekends, however, you can still board the ancient steam locomotive.
