City Trip Waidhofen an der Ybbs

Medieval towers paired with modern esprit

Where seven towers watch over the historic town centre, history and the present come together in an impressive way. Waidhofen an der Ybbs was already a centre of the iron trade in the Middle Ages: blacksmiths exported their products as far as the Orient and Venice - and even today, magnificent hammer masters' houses bear witness to this golden age.

The townscape is characterised by the excellently preserved medieval townscape with its defensive walls, towers (four church towers, three town towers) and gates, which give Waidhofen an der Ybbs its unmistakable charm as the "town of towers". At the same time, Schloss Rothschild with its glass cube and interactive museum is a clear sign of modern esprit. Between small shops and cafés, the old town is now a lively meeting place in the Mostviertel - a place that remains because it changes.

On a beautiful autumn day on the Buchenberg or in winter with coffee and cake in one of the many cosy cafés - including mine - that's when the city shows its most beautiful side for me.

Places of interest

Schloss Rothschild

Where history meets modern architecture: the neo-Gothic Schloss Rothschild, whose castle tower is crowned by a striking glass cube by Hans Hollein, is the landmark of Waidhofen an der Ybbs. Inside, the 5 Elements Museum invites visitors on an interactive journey of discovery through the themes of fire, water, earth, wood and metal.

Those who climb the more than 100 steps of the castle tower, which is open daily, are rewarded with a sweeping panoramic view of the town.

An insider's tip: the castle is located directly at the mouth of the Schwarzbach stream into the Ybbs. The Schwarzbach area - a quiet, romantic spot by the water - is accessible free of charge via the Info Point during the opening hours of the 5 Elements Museum.

Night watchman:inside tours

A cityscape full of contrasts unfolds between medieval towers and modern architecture. As you stroll through the alleyways, over bridges and across squares, paths lead from the city tower to the aforementioned glass cube of Schloss Rothschild.

The old town becomes particularly atmospheric during a night watchman tour: when torchlight illuminates the alleyways, the night watchmen in traditional garb tell stories of old times, iron, trade and change. An atmospheric encounter with the city that shows how alive history has remained here.

Ybbstal cycle path

The Ybbstal cycle path leads from Ybbs an der Donau to Lunz am See. The centrepiece between Waidhofen and Lunz am See is considered one of the most beautiful cycle routes in Lower Austria. On the former railway line, you cycle through river landscapes, over bridges and past old railway stations. Ideal for leisure cyclists - with refreshment stops and bathing areas. And a comfortable return journey: the Radtramper bus and the Ybbstal cycle taxi run between Lunz and Waidhofen, and the railway also runs from Waidhofen towards Amstetten.

Culture & craftsmanship with character

Small but nice: the Waidhofen Film Stage shows curated films away from the mainstream, while the former town hall, the Plenkersaal, or the Crystal Hall of Schloss Rothschild regularly host cultural events, stage formats and special event evenings. We also recommend a visit to the Schosshofspiele theatre and the summer cinema in the Schloss Rothschild courtyard.

If you want to delve deeper, visit one of the traditional cooperages that have made Waidhofen an der Ybbs internationally famous - places where craftsmanship and patience form their own aesthetic.

Coffee houses, restaurants & pubs

Waidhofen an der Ybbs tastes down-to-earth, fine and regional. At the weekly market on the upper town square on Tuesdays and Fridays, you can meet the producers from the surrounding area. Incidentally, the oldest market regulations date back to 1587. In the 19th century, up to 121 grain carts rolled into the town every market day and people are still busy shopping today.

Small cafés create a cosy atmosphere. A special tip is the Matthias Krenn bakery on the Hoher Markt: here, traditional recipes and contemporary craftsmanship are used to create crispy breads, seasonal Kletzenbrot and fragrant gingerbread - naturally with regional ingredients.
