Cultural cycling routes

The Iron Curtain Trail (EuroVelo 13) and the Kamp-Thaya-March cycle route are the most harmonious stage experiences. You can also cycle sections and take more time for the cultural stops.

Many excursion destinations, including cultural sights, offer discounted tickets for children, young people, students, senior citizens, families or groups. There are also advantage cards such as the Niederösterreich Card, which gives you free entry to over 350 excursion destinations.

Many cultural venues can be visited spontaneously, but it is always worth checking the opening and tour times in advance for busy highlights (such as castles, abbey tours or special exhibitions) as well as for small, fine excursion destinations. Spring and autumn are often ideal for a good mix of pleasant driving and relaxed sightseeing. In the height of summer, we recommend an early start and tour planning that turns the cultural sights into "cool breaks" (e.g. indoors, museums, churches).

Several of the cultural cycle tours can be easily combined with public transport: The Schlösserreich cycling loop starts/ends directly at Marchegg railway station. On the Piestingtal cycle route, Markt Piesting and Waldegg, among others, are well connected by train, and the Thermen cycle route starts in the south of Vienna and can be planned flexibly thanks to the dense railway connections along the southern railway line. The Monasteries, Emperors and Artists Route can also be easily planned with a railway start via Mödling or Baden. The Iron Curtain Trail and the Kamp-Thaya-March cycle route are particularly suitable as stages/sections that can be combined with a train/bus start or exit.

Plan a realistic amount of time for each cultural venue: Arriving, parking your bike (safely), sightseeing - this often takes longer than expected. A good rule of thumb: Preferably fewer stops, but without time pressure, and choose the route so that you have a "reserve". If you want to see a lot, it's best to simply stay in the region for a day or two longer.

Take a light extra layer with you for visits (possibly cool temperatures indoors) and remember to park your bike safely. Calm behaviour and appropriate clothing are usually a matter of course in sacred spaces - this will make your visit more relaxed.
