Natural and river bathing areas

Wild swimming in Lower Austria

Sometimes all it takes is a step into the water and everything becomes easier. In Lower Austria, it's not just lakes that carry you through hot days - it's rivers and streams whose currents are full of energy: sometimes wild and icy cold, sometimes calm and emerald green, surprisingly cool even in late August. Between pebble banks, sun-warmed stones and shady banks, the oppressive heat turns into a refreshing holiday feeling.

Ybbs

Refreshment factor: High
River character: Friendly mountain river
Water colour: Crystal clear

From the Ötscher massif to the Danube: first wild and cold, then wider and calmer - but always crystal clear. On romantic banks, sunny gravel banks alternate with meadows; from comfortable river baths to quiet sandbanks. And if you are travelling along the Ybbstal cycle path, you will find bathing spots like a string of pearls.

Erlauf Gorge

Refreshment factor: Very high
River character: Pristine and wild
Water colour: Spectacular

A cool natural jewel of rock and forest: glacial boulders - bare or moss green - in between turquoise, gurgling water that repeatedly forms calm pools. More gorge path than bathing spot, but perfect for cooling your feet in midsummer. And, if you're a confident, more courageous swimmer, the perfect way to cool off on hot summer days.

Schwarza in the Höllental valley

Refreshment factor: Like the Arctic Ocean
River character: Cold mountain stream
Water colour: Crystal clear

When the lakes become lukewarm in summer, it is still cool in the Höllental valley. Steep limestone walls of the Rax and Schneeberg, shady forests - and the Schwarza below, crystal clear and ice-cold. Sandbanks, small beaches and natural pools invite you to dip your tired feet in, especially along the 1st Vienna Water Pipeline Trail between the Rax cable car and Weichtalhaus.

Swimming is not permitted!

Danube

Refreshment factor: High
River character: Wide river
Water colour: Not blue, but still beautiful

Some sections of the Danube look like a tropical beach with alluvial forest: sandy banks, roots, dense forest and water that remains pleasantly cool even in midsummer. The bathing spots between Krems and Spitz in the Wachau valley are particularly beautiful.

Caution: The current is strong - further out only for experienced swimmers. Swimming is prohibited at high tide.

Kamp

Refreshing character: Fresh, but still leisurely
River character: Only leisurely at the river baths
Water colour: Glistening amber colour

From its headwaters on the border between the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel regions, the Kamp grows into a river: first wild between mossy rocks and small basins, then characterised by the Kamp Valley ("Kamptal" in German) reservoirs. Between Gars and Langenlois you will find historic river baths with bathhouses from the turn of the century. Perfectly combinable with a wine journey in the Kamp Valley ("Kamptal" in German) wine-growing region.

Thaya

Refreshment factor: usually not deep to the navel or chest
River character: unspoilt river course, sluggish to mildly rushing
Water colour: rusty brown to muddy green, but always sparkling clean

Border river with a quiet charm: the Thaya often runs between the Waldviertel and Weinviertel regions along the border to the Czech Republic - its water sometimes appears brownish, but is of excellent quality. Sandbanks and shallow banks make it easy to get in, for example at the old bridge near Hardegg. In the village of Thaya there is a river bath with a raft ferry, which cyclists can use to get to the other bank using muscle power.
