City Trip Retz

Baroque splendour, deep cellar worlds and the vastness of the vineyards

Retz in the Weinviertel unfolds its special charm between rolling vineyards and walls steeped in history. The wine town near the Czech border is famous for the largest historic wine cellar in Central Europe - the Retzer Unterwelt - and for the windmill, one of the last still functioning examples in Austria, which looks out over the landscape from afar. If you stroll through the historic centre of Retz and the wine cellar lanes (the former wine production and storage sites) in the Retzer Land, you will discover a lively mixture of culture, wine and rural serenity.

Whether on a cycle tour through the vineyards, wine tastings or a walk to the Calvary: Retz combines history, enjoyment and exercise to create a travelling experience that lingers long after you have left.

More cellars than streets. Retz is known for its 20 kilometre-long underground cellar network. Due to its size, many parts of this system are still unexplored.

Old Town Retz

Spacious and magnificent: the main square in Retz is one of the largest in Austria and is an open-air stage set of Baroque and Venetian architecture. The Verderberhaus with its Renaissance façade and the sgraffito house from the 16th century with its artistic images from mythology and the Bible tell of the town's heyday.

If you want to delve deeper, accompany the night watchman through the alleyways of the walled city and experience stories full of curiosities.

Town hall tower

The town hall tower, a silent sentinel, rises above the town directly on the main square. 128 steps lead up to the viewing platform at a height of 30 metres. At the top, a panoramic view opens up over rooftops and vineyards all the way to the windmill - a panorama that shows Retz from its most beautiful side.

The Retz Town Hall Tower is open daily from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm (Sunday until 4.00 pm). Admission: € 2,-

Places of interest

Retz adventure cellar

Beneath the streets of Retz lies a hidden universe: a 20 km long labyrinth of cellarsdug deep into the pure sea sand. The people of Retz have been storing their wine here since the 13th century - generation after generation. Some of the cellars reach down three storeys into the cool silence, where the temperature is a constant 10 to 12 degrees.

On a guided tour through the Retzer Erlebniskeller, you walk through endless corridors and learn about myths, stories and hidden treasures. One of these treasures is a bottle of the famous KatzensprungThe most famous of the state treaty wines from 1954, and not marvelling at it during a cellar tour in Retz would be like walking past the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

Retz windmill

The Retz windmill rises high above the town - the proud landmark of the town. Built in 1853 by Johannes Tobias Bergmann, today it turns and grinds again as one of the last operational windmills in Austria. When its blades turn in the wind, you can feel the power of the craft that once determined the rhythm of everyday life.

Visitors can not only experience a technical monument of great cultural and historical value, but can also take part in the production of traditional windmill bread in the bakery.

The windmill is best reached in around 15 minutes on foot or by bike from the main square.

Wine tasting at the winery

On request and at wein.gut.schauen on fixed dates, visitors can experience the wineries, which are more than just a sip of wine - they are encounters with landscape, craftsmanship and attitude.

At the Gruber Röschitz organic winery, centuries-old tradition meets contemporary, sustainable viticulture. The Gruber family focuses on natural cultivation, manual labour and authenticity - from the vine to the bottle.

After a walk through the wine cellar lanes, you can immerse yourself in the art of winemaking and the lifestyle of the Weinviertel.

Cycle routes to the most beautiful wine cellar lanes

Along gentle hills, cycle paths wind through vineyards and lead to historic settlements and wine cellar lanes - mysterious places that were once wine production and storage sites and are now lively venues for tastings, festivals and encounters. Each stop tells of living wine culture and traditional craftsmanship.

If you don't have your own bike with you, hire one from sgrafit-bike on the main square - including route tips from bike enthusiast Wolfgang Klinggraber.

Wine taverns, restaurants & a farmers' market

Retz is the first Slow Food Village in Lower Austria. Craftsmanship and regionality are also reflected in the gourmet market on the main square every Saturday. A visit to the wine tavern with classics such as salted gherkins, pepperoni, Liptauer bread, bacon or cold roast pork is almost a must.

The pub cuisine also favours regional ingredients: Weinviertel asparagus, pumpkin, onions and game. A glass of Grüne Veltliner Weinviertel DAC or the autochthonous Blauer Portugieser is the perfect accompaniment.

My favourite place in the western Weinviertel is Röschitz, about 15 minutes by car from Retz - this is where I grew up. Walking through the vineyards, I still discover many new things today!
