Frequently asked questions about cycling tours by bus and train in Lower Austria
Yes, bicycles can be taken on most of Lower Austria's railways, such as the Waldviertelbahn, Wachaubahn, Reblaus Express and Mariazellerbahn, and are often free of charge. In most cases, a reservation is recommended or required. On regular ÖBB trains, separate tariffs and rules apply for bicycles. Please find out about possible restrictions and requirements before your journey.
The Radtramper bus runs daily between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See during the summer holidays. It transports cyclists and their bikes back to the starting point. In May, June, September and October, it runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The Ybbstal bike taxi is also available as a flexible return service (can be booked by telephone, within 2 hours on site, recommended for groups of 4 or more).
The Wachau railway runs between Krems and Emmersdorf. A combination with the Danube cycle path is particularly recommended, e.g. stage 5 on the north bank via Dürnstein, Spitz and Weißenkirchen. Stage 5 on the south bank is also possible, from Krems to Mautern to Melk (or vice versa). The railway offers a relaxed return journey - bikes can be carried free of charge, but a parking space must be reserved.

Yes, if you don't want to cycle to Mariazell, you can use one of the ÖBB regional trains on the route from St. Pölten to Schrambach. In addition, the VOR-Radtramper Traisental runs between St. Pölten and Kernhof Gscheid on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between May and October. The bus runs daily during the summer holidays.
Transport is often free of charge (Wachau railway, Reblaus Express, Waldviertel railway). For the Mariazell railway, the bike ticket costs € 5 for the entire route and € 3 for part of the route. In all cases, it is advisable to reserve a seat, especially at weekends or when travelling in groups. For the Wachau railway and the Waldviertel Railway, advance reservation (free of charge) is mandatory.
