City break in Tulln an der Donau

High above the treetops of ancient giants, the garden show DIE GARTEN TULLN boasts a fantastic lookout point. 

Designed by architect Ernst Maurer, the 30-metre-high treetop walk “Baumwipfelweg” consists of a viewing tower with several levels, staircases and platforms, and can be explored on foot or via a lift, making it accessible to all.

From the very top, you can look out not only over the 70 model gardens at GARTEN TULLN, but also over Tulln itself, the Tullnerfeld region, and as far as the Vienna Woods and the Danube. In good weather, you can even see the Schneeberg and the Ötscher, two marvellous mountains in Lower Austria. Information boards showcase the most important floodplain trees and garden birds, all of which are native to GARTEN TULLN. 

Art lovers can immerse themselves in the world of the famous artist at the Egon Schiele Geburtshaus near Tulln Central Station and at the Egon Schiele Museum. The Stadtmuseum Tulln, which includes the Römermuseum, takes its visitors back to times even further in the past, whilst the Österreichische Zuckermuseum tells the ‘sweet story’ of the town and sugar production since the 18^th century.

Since 2022, the Haus der Digitalisierung has been hosting changing exhibitions on digital themes. 

Sports enthusiasts will find an indoor alternative at the Donausplash indoor swimming pool, which features a large sports pool, a sauna and an infrared cabin.

"Regentag" in Tulln is not an episode of a bad-weather programme, but the famous ship by theartist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, which has been moored in the guest harbour on the Danube as a floating work of art since 2004. 

Hundertwasser bought the ship in 1968, had it converted into a floating studio in Venice, and travelled on it across the Atlantic ocean, through the Caribbean and as far as New Zealand and Tahiti. In 2004, the listed ship was brought to Tulln for an exhibition and has been moored there ever since as a unique example of Hundertwasser’s organic architecture – with colourful façades and unconventional forms that reflect Hundertwasser’s connection with nature, his time spent travelling and his art. 

The Hundertwasser ship ‘Regentag’, a popular photo opportunity from the outside, can be visited as part of a guided tour by prior appointment. 

Tulln is easily accessible by public transport: you can reach Tulln by train via the railways Franz-Josefs-Bahn and Tullnerfelder Bahn. The Tulln Stadt and Tullnerfeld stations are easily accessible by public transport; from Vienna, it takes only about 20 minutes to reach this town on the Danube. 

Tulln is also easily accessible by bus, including Postbus, Bahnbus and regional bus services. The Schubertpark bus station is located in the town centre. 

By bike: Tulln offers the Danube Cycle Path (EuroVelo 6), a cycle route that leads straight into the town centre.

The area around Tulln boasts a wealth of cultural and scenic attractions that take visitors on a varied journey of discovery. The Wachau region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its picturesque vineyards and castles steeped in history, is renowned for its breathtaking beauty. 

No less impressive is Klosterneuburg Abbey, a place steeped in history and art that offers deep insights into Austria’s past. 

Garden lovers will be drawn to the show garden "Kittenberger Erlebnisgärten” in Schiltern with their colourful variety. 

Grafenegg Castle impresses with its majestic park and the unique ‘Wolkenturm’ (Cloud Tower), an outdoor stage that captivates an international audience every summer during the Grafenegg Festival.

Not to be forgotten: the surrounding wine-growing regions of Wagram, Traisental, Kremstal, Kamptal and Wachau, which wine lovers simply must visit. 

The town is a popular holiday destination all year round: in winter, when the artificial ice rink becomes a meeting place for ice skaters, and the Advent markets enchant the town with their lights and scents. 

Spring awakens the garden show DIE GARTEN TULLN from its winter slumber. Discover the region’s charm on foot as you explore the exhibition’s more than 70 model gardens, or by cycle along the cycle paths in and around Tulln and along the Danube Cycle Path.

In summer, the Tullner Aubadinvites you to soak up the sun and enjoy a dip in fresh water whilst canoeing allows you to experience the tranquil beauty of the Tullner Au (floodplain). 

Autumn bathes the town in warm colours. Museums such as the Egon Schiele Museum, the Roman Museum and Tulln’s picturesque town centre invite you to stroll and explore.
