Travel Tip: 48h in the Alpine Mostviertel

The Mostviertel in southwestern Lower Austria has many facets:

The landscape of the north is gentle, green and fertile, while in the south, peaks rise above mountain lakes and valleys. The diversity of our cultural landscape is as rich as our range of activities. The spectrum ranges from hikes in alpine heights to entertainment experiences in the valley, and culinary surprises.

Regardless of whether you want to spend your holiday in the Mostviertel with your family, friends or your true love, there is a suitable programme for everyone. Because, even if you want to pursue different activities during the day, you can come together again in the evening: in the castle tavern, the lake restaurant or in the traditional inn.

So that you can enjoy your time with us to the full, we have put together a small selection of excursion destinations that guarantee an eventful weekend. Before you start right away, we would like to give you one more thing to take with you: Stay a few days longer, because a good time often goes by so quickly. And 48 hours are not enough to experience everything. Or just come back soon.

Good to know
With the WildeWunderCard, you can experience all the wild wonders in the alpine Mostviertel free of charge or at reduced prices (public transport such as the Mariazellerbahn is included). The WildeWunder hosts issue the card free of charge for the duration of your stay.
Good to sleep
From traditional JUFA hotels and farm holidays to spacious holiday flats and exquisite 4-star hotels, there are no limits to the sleeping and accommodation options in the Mostviertel!
Here you can find all accommodation options at a glance.

Day 1: South of the Ötscher

Option 1: For everyone looking for mountain, nature and relaxation

Morning: From Erlaufsee to the peak of the Gemeindealpe
A morning could hardly begin more beautifully: From the shore of the turquoise-green Erlaufsee, you hike past the Lindenhof farm to the Erlauf spring, where you become immersed in an enchanting fairy-tale forest. The steep ascent to the Brachalm is rewarded with fabulous views of the Ötscher, until you reach the 1,626 m high summit of the Peak of the Gemeindealpe and stop at the Terzerhaus.

Noon: Summit enjoyment with a view
On the sun terrace of the Terzerhaus mountain restaurant (alternatively reachable by chairlift from Mitterbach), you can enjoy traditional specialities and the unique summit panorama of the surrounding mountains.

Afternoon: Rolling descent to Mitterbach
You can reach the middle station on foot or by chairlift. From here, you can take a 4 km ride down to Mitterbach on cool mountain carts.

Option 2: For those looking for fun, action and relaxation:

Morning: EIBL Jet: a fast start to the day
The only all-weather toboggan run in Lower Austria, the EIBL Jet near Türnitz, guarantees a speedy start to the day and offers lots of fun for young and old. You roll down into the valley over countless steep curves, waves and jumps. After so much action and adrenaline, we recommend a detour to the nearby Valentino ice cream parlour before continuing on to the next adventure in Annaberg.

Noon: Lunch on the alpine pasture
The 4-seater chairlift Hennesteck - alternatively via the direct ascent (approx. 1.5 h) or Herzerlweg (approx. 2.5 h) - takes you relaxed to the Anna-Alm, where hearty home-style cooking, fresh pastries and a unique view of the Alpine foothills await you.

Afternoon: Down into the valley at 120 km/h
386 m in altitude, 1,356 m in length and top speeds of up to 120 km/h, it almost feels like flying when you take the Zipline down from Hennesteck into the valley.

Reunited after a diverse programme in the late afternoon

At the crystal clear Erlaufsee
Back in the valley, you can reward yourself with a dip in the cool waters: at picturesque Erlaufsee, you can unwind, take a romantic boat trip across the water or enjoy a refreshing ice cream from the beach buffet.

Evening: Culinary evening in Wienerbruck
The Ötscher-Base in Wienerbruck is not only the starting point for numerous hikes in the Natural park Ötscher-Tormäuer, but also the right place for the perfect end to the day: the fantastically situated Seegasthaus provides culinary highlights in an idyllic setting as the sun slowly disappears into the horizon.

Day 2: North of the Ötscher

Option 1: For everyone looking for mountain, nature and relaxation

Morning: Across footbridges in the high moors
In order to explore the Nature reserve Leckermoos and its unique flora, you can hike from Göstling via Hintereck to the Hochreit plateau and on to the Hochtal. An idyllic moor adventure trail leads through the Wilderness area Dürrenstein, where you can learn a lot about the creation, special features as well as the vulnerabilities of the high moor.

Noon: Ablass refreshment station
On the way back to Göstling, you pass the 300-year-old Farmhouse Ablass: for refreshments, you can enjoy the farm's own beef and lamb specialities, homemade wood-fired bread for the Brettljause and hearty farmer's doughnuts to round off the meal.

Afternoon: Adventure Hochkar
On the Göstlinger's local mountain: for beginners, families and children, the Bergmandl via ferrata offers the perfect introduction to the world of via ferrata. For those looking for more of a challenge, the Heli-Kraft via ferrata is the right way to the Hochkar peak: from steep iron ladders to dizzyingly deep views and free-floating rope bridges, everything is on offer. All those wanting to enjoy even more views can visit the 360° Sky tour at the Hochkar mountain station afterwards.

Option 2: For all those who are looking for fun, action and relaxation

Morning: On the wood trail in Göstling
Along the Mendlingbach, you walk through an imposing gorge and ravine world, which provides an insight into the last still functioning Timber drifting plant in Central Europe, an instructive and entertaining tour for the whole family, where you will certainly not be on the wrong track. Another tip: take part in a drifting demonstration.

Noon: Stop at the manor house
The former Herrenhaus im Mendlingtal is the ideal place to recharge your batteries after the hike: the fresh trout from the manor's own show pond is particularly recommended. For dessert there are heavenly homemade pastries...

Afternoon: Archery course or brine bath
A special experience awaits you next to the chairlift valley station in Lackenhof: the 3D archery parkour in Weitental leads through a sparse beech forest full of surprises. Tip: inexperienced archers are accompanied through the forest by trained guides. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the Ybbstaler Solebad in Göstling with its 34 degree warm salt water invites you to relax while your children can explore the snake slide.

Reunited after a different programme in the evening

Evening: Castle tavern at Lake Lunz
Even if it is sometimes difficult to say goodbye, it could hardly be more beautiful than in Lunz am See: char from Lake Lunz, exquisite wines from organic production and much more await you in Joschis Palace Tavern.
