Holidays without a car

The easiest way to reach Lower Austria from Vienna is by train or bus. Regular train services take you directly to towns such as St. Pölten, Krems and Wiener Neustadt, whilst regional bus and train services provide onward travel to the surrounding areas. 

Regions with good public transport links are particularly ideal, such as the provincial capital St. Pölten, the Wachau region with Krems and Melk (accessible via the Wachaubahn, for example), Baden bei Wien and Wiener Neustadt in southern Lower Austria, Retz in the Weinviertel, the Mostviertel region with the Mariazellerbahn, or the Waldviertel region with the Waldviertelbahn.

Yes. In summer, many hiking, cycling and Excursion destinations are easily accessible by train and bus. Regions along the Danube, such as Krems and Melk, Retz in the Weinviertel, Baden, Wiener Neustadt and the areas around St. Pölten and Zwettl, offer good public transport links and opportunities for active and enjoyable holidays without a car. For hiking enthusiasts, the summer mountain railways are a great way to reach the summit in comfort and enjoy a leisurely stop for refreshments at the top. In addition, on selected dates, heritage trains run on the most beautiful historic railway lines in Lower Austria.

Yes. Even in winter, it’s perfectly possible to go on holiday without a car. Train and bus services will take you to popular winter sports resorts and towns in Lower Austria. Special offers such as the ‘Bus zum Schnee’ make it easier to travel to selected ski resorts, such as Hochkar and Semmering-Hirschenkogel, without a car.

Many excursion destinations are directly connected to train or bus routes. In addition, regional buses, sightseeing buses or short walks link the stops with the starting points of the attractions.
