Travel tip: 48h in the mountain regions of the Wiener Alps

The Viennese Alps region is much more than the Rax- and Schneeberg:

In addition to Vienna's well-known local mountains, the excursion destinations Bucklige Welt, Wechsel and Hohe Wand also promise a diverse mix of pristine nature experiences, loads of action and cultural insights.

Explore the green landscape on foot or by bike, climb peaks on steep paths or on adventurous via ferrate, enjoy the tranquillity of nature at an alpine picnic or let yourself be enchanted by a surprise menu at the Hauben Restaurant. Only one thing is important: take your time to arrive and breathe in the feeling of summer freshness - then nothing will stand in the way of an unforgettable short trip!

Good to know
With the Schneeberg-Rax-Combi-ticket, you can get to the highest mountains of the Viennese Alps at a reduced price by cogwheel railway and cable car: the Combi-ticket includes a ride up and down the mountain on both the Schneebergbahn and the Rax cable car.
Good to sleep
From unique double rooms on green meadows to familial farms and exclusive noble hotels - the Viennese Alps have the right accommodation for every taste. Here you can find all accommodation options at a glance.

Day 1: Around the Bucklige Welt and the Wechselland region

Option 1: For all those who are looking for mountains, nature and relaxation

Morning: A bed in nature
Waking up in the middle of green meadows and gazing at the rolling hills of the Bucklige Welt? The „Wiener Alpen Bett in da Wies’n“ in the garden of the Triad in Krumbach makes it possible: architecturally stylish, the light-flooded wooden cubes present themselves in a quiet location with an unobstructed view of the green landscape. The day truly couldn't begin more beautifully!

Morning: Through the Bucklige Welt on e-bikes
The tour starts at the "Rad König" Krumbacherhof: from here, you follow the wonderful Panorama and Rosengartenroute and pedal on via the Wetterroute to the absolute highlight of the tour: the Windrad samt Aussichtsplattform (windmill with a viewing platform) in Lichtenegg!

Noon: A visit to the goat farm
Those who pedal so enthusiastically deserve a little break: at Mandl’s Bio-Ziegenhof (Mandl's organic goat farm) in Lichtenegg you can snack on exquisite fresh goat cheese while watching the goats play in the straw through two panoramic windows!

Afternoon: With the prospect of organic ice cream
Along the delightful panoramic route to a cooling refreshment in Krumbach: Georg and Andrea Blochberger's Eis-Greissler not only offers a huge selection of delicious natural ice cream varieties, but also regional dishes that are best enjoyed in the feel-good base of wooden loungers by the lily pond, while the kids try out the free fall on the "Milkshaker" in the adventure park.

Option 2: For all those who are looking for fun, action and relaxation

Morning: Fun and excitement at the Erlebnisalm Mönichkirchen
There is a lot to discover at the Erlebnisalm Mönichkirchen: The four-seater sun cable car takes you comfortably up to the alpine pasture at 1,200 m, where fast-paced downhill rides on Austria's first roller coaster await you or you can spend fun-filled hours on the Schaukelweg (swing path).

Noon: On the Schwaig in Mönichkirchen
After such an action-packed programme, you should definitely treat yourself to a break at the Alpengasthof Enzian or the Berggasthof next to the mountain station. There you can enjoy great seasonal dishes on the sun terrace.

Afternoon: High up in the climbing park
The Kletterpark Hamari (climbing park), also in Mönichkirchen, offers fun and thrills for the entire family: at the largest adventure park in the Viennese Alps, you can test your climbing skills on 12 courses and 85 stations or enjoy the feeling of freedom on the 600m-long flying fox.

Evening: From the Bucklige Welt to Wechselland and on to the Semmering-Rax and Schneebergland regions.
The unique Looshaus am Kreuzberg is not just a hotel and restaurant, but also an experience of a special kind: spending a night in the stylishly simple rooms of the century-old architect Adolf Loos and dining royally with a fantastic view of Vienna's local mountains, Rax and Schneeberg, is an opportunity not to be missed!

Day 2: Summer retreat on the Rax and in Schneebergland

Option 1: For everyone looking for mountain, nature and relaxation

Morning: Adventure at your doorstep
From the Looshaus, you follow scenic paths through sparse woods and green meadows to the ridge of the Kreuzberg: here, an impressive view of the World Heritage Semmeringbahn (Semmering Railway World Heritage Site) opens up. If you prefer to be on the saddle rather than on foot, you can also ride your Mountain bike up the Kreuzberg.

Noon: Amidst green spruces on the Kreuzberg
The rustic Speckbacherhütte is located in a small clearing. From here, you can enjoy not only a fabulous view, but also culinary delicacies from the region. Tip: In May, the 110-year-old rhododendrons begin to blossom and a touch of magic is in the air!

Afternoon: Relaxing in the Alpenstrandbad
The Alpenstrandbad Edlach has been hosting many unforgettable summers since 1928. Since it reopened in 2020, the idyllic lido near Payerbach invites you to relax and unwind. After all, what would a summer day be without a dip in the cool water?

Evening: Where Freud and Frankl once dined
The stately Knappenhof near Reichenau was already a meeting place for cultural summer retreats more than 100 years ago. Today, gourmet chef Max Stiegl treats his guests to regional finesse and unusual creations on one of the most beautiful sun terraces in Lower Austria. Sit back, enjoy and feel how beautiful deceleration can be.

Option 2: For those looking for fun, action and relaxation:

Morning: In the shadow of the gorge
Surrounded by rock faces up to 60m deep, you hike over wooden footbridges and bridges through the cool gorge Klamm des Johannesbachs near Würflach. A nature paradise for children and adults, which also provides a way to cool down on hot summer days, and the perfect place for romantic walks for two!

Noon: Open-air picnic
At the foot of the Hohe Wand, you can also indulge in culinary delights in the orchard of the Obstgarten der Fruchtwelt „Mohr-Sederl“: Just drop into the grass with your picnic basket and blanket and enjoy the extraordinary panorama!

Afternoon: For body and soul
The Fischauer Thermalbad are located in the middle of a former imperial park, where two natural pools with 19 °C warm spring water provide natural relaxation between old chestnut trees and romantic lawns.

Evening: Last stop Haubenkoch
In the fifth generation, gourmet chef Christoph Puchegger runs the Wirtshaus in Winzendorf, an inn under the family name: it is a place of pleasure where the young chef conjures up seasonal and regional dishes with his creative spirit, his passion and his team. Winner of several awards and prizes, there is no better host to round off an eventful weekend.
