Marktgemeinde Kautzen

Sustainable place of the scorpion: The market town of Kautzen in the district of Waidhofen an der Thaya is located in the northern Waldviertel - in the midst of unspoiled nature. The town is known for its wonderful hiking routes, renewable energy sources and several historical and mysterious sights. The whole family will feel at home here on a relaxing vacation or a day trip with great views.

Kautzen: Magical excursion tips between tree and rock

Several natural spectacles are waiting to be discovered by visitors of all ages. Of course, it's even better when the grown-ups tell the accompanying stories and legends on a walk through the forest.

In Illmauer Wald, a small granite pyramid - erected in 1825 in honor of a general's family - is a popular hiking destination. Near Engelbrechts there is a well-known formation of granite stones in the forest called the Scorpion Stone. Information boards provide details about the individual stones, which together are said to correspond to the constellation of the scorpion. The rocks and the entire site are said to have a healing and energetic effect. There is also an alleged UFO landing site next to it.

The living museum & other sights in Kautzen

Less magical but well worth a visit are the castles in Groß-Taxen and Illmau, which bear witness to times long past. The Catholic parish church of St. James the Elder is also well known - a baroque church with a Gothic core.

Excursion destinations also include the Kautzen museum of local history. It provides an insight into the history of the municipality and shows old crafts - also as part of the "Living Museum", where old craft techniques are demonstrated live at selected times.
