Buchbergwarte

Lookout tower, Mountain summit, Scenic lookout

Description

On September 26, 2004, the three communities of Asperhofen, Maria Anzbach and Neulengbach held the ceremonial opening of the new lookout on the 464 m high Buchberg. Since then, the Buchberg has once again become one of the most popular excursion destinations in the western part of the Vienna Woods, not least because the Buchberg refuge is located directly on the Buchberg summit.

The history of the Buchberg lookout and the Buchberg shelter

At the end of the 19th century, the Neulengbach club "D'Wildegger" (named after Wildegg Castle - district of Mödling, near Heiligenkreuz) decided to build a lookout on the Buchberg. This is completed in 1901 and in 1907 the"Wildegger shelter" is opened next door. Both buildings burn down in 1923 after a lightning strike.

In 1924 "D'Wildegger" builds the shelter again, which undergoes numerous extensions in the following years. In the following years, the popular excursion restaurant was renamed "Hans Krieger Hütte" after the former chairman of the "D'Wildegger" club.

In 1949 the shelter burns down again and for a few years a barrack is used as a bar. In 1954, a new mountain inn was built by a private owner, which still exists today. After a change of ownership, the restaurant ceased to operate in 1980.

In 1982, a citizens' initiative acquires the land immediately adjacent to the shelter and makes it available to the public. In 2002, thecommunities of Neulengbach, Maria Anzbach and Asperhofen alsosucceed in acquiring theland of the former shelter. The goal of the association"Tourismusgemeinschaft Buchberg", to which the above-mentioned communities belong, is to make the Buchberg a popular destination for excursions again.

Therefore, in 2003 the shelter is opened and since 2006 it is managed by Irene Cevela and Gerhard Köcher.

After 81 years, the time has come on September 26, 2004: the new, imposing, 22.5 meter high,Buchbergwarte is handed over to its intended use.
