Mountain summit


The Gahns is the southeastern foothill plateau of the Schneeberg in the municipality of Bürg-Vöstenhof. It covers an area of about 2,150 hectares. Its highest peak is the Schwarzenberg with 1,352 meters above sea level.

Location: Vienna Alps in Lower Austria, part of the Rax-Schneeberg group, Northern Limestone Alps, Bürg-Vöstendorf municipality.

Except for the large meadows, such as the Bodenwiese with an area of 97 hectares, most of the mountain is forested. The Bodenwiese is considered the largest alpine pasture in Lower Austria. The Alpl, the highest alpine pasture in the area is located on the Krummbachstein (1,602m).

Hikes on the Gahns

Numerous ascents lead to the Gahns, which is very popular with hikers.

  • from Payerbach via Gasthof Hochberger to Bodenwiese
  • from Reichenau an der Rax via the Saurüssel to the Bodenwiese
  • from St. Christof to the Bodenwiese
  • from Kaiserbrunn to the Knofeleben
  • through the Eng to the Knofeleben
  • from Prigglitz over the Hartriegel to the Bodenwiese
  • from Bürg-Vöstenhof via the Große Waldwiese to the Bodenwiese

Other hikes on and around the Gahns are the Payerbach-Reichenau hiking tour from the Payerbach train station to the Knofeleben nature friend's house or the hike to the Pottschacher Hütte starting from the Prigglitz municipal office.

On its northern side, the Gadenweither Klamm, where the Johannesquelle spring is located, leads to Gadenweith.
Many hiking trails also lead from Schneeberg to the Gahns.

There are several huts in the area of the Gahns where you can stop for refreshments. The Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben on the Knofeleben, the Waldburgangerhütte on the Bodenwiese and the Pottschacher Hütte on the Hartriegel.
