Semmering

Semmering is nicknamed “Magic Mountain” and quite deservedly, too, because its great routes really do enchant everyone, from hiker to mountain biker.

Semmering enchants hikers, walkers and mountain bikers alike, with its grand lookout platforms and the Semmering Railroad, a UNESCO World Heritage structure. That is why it is affectionately called Magic Mountain, and not just by Lower Austrians.

On the Magic Mountain train
Semmering Pass (elevation 950 m) is home to the incomparable Semmering Railroad, a UNESCO World Heritage structure and Europe's first mountain railroad. Views are grand not just from the train; the 8-passenger gondola lift also lets walkers, hikers and mountain bikers ascend the mountain in magnificent scenery.

From vistas and descents
Hikers are fond of the “20 schilling view” through the Vienna Alps Viewer. This panorama of the Kalte Rinne viaduct once graced the 20 schilling note. Mountain bikers rave about Bikepark Semmering, which has a downhill course, two freeride courses and one family course.

Railroad hiking
You can take scenic hikes along the Semmering Railroad. The Railroad Trail (Bahnwanderweg), has a number of lookout points with unique scenic views. The reason for the name Magic Mountain becomes clearer with every lookout.

Our tip: Visit the new Semmering Railroads Information Center (Informationszentrum Semmeringeisenbahnen).
